Exploring the Subgenres for Metal: Thrash Metal

Brief History: The 80's was the best decade for Thrash Metal. Let's start off with first Thrash Metal album that was released by Metallica's in 1983, Kill 'Em All. Less than six months later Slayer's depute album, Show No Mercy, came out. Fast forward a year and you have all these Thrash Metal bands starting to come out. Anthrax released their depute album Fistful of Metal. Exodus deputed Bonded by Blood. And both Slayer and Metallica released their second albums (Slayer's Hell Awaits, Metallica's Ride the Lightening). In 1985 the final of the "Big 4" bands released there depute albums, Megadeth's Killing is My Business... And Business is Good! But their are two bands that also released their depute albums that don't get that much credit, Kreator's Endless Pain and Sepultura's Bestial Devastation EP. In 1986 you see the release of three Classic Thrash Metal albums release by Metallica (Master of Puppets), Megadeth (Peace Sells... But Who is Buying?) and Slayer (Reign of Blood). In 1987 Anthrax released their third album Among the Living and Death Angel released their depute album The Ultra-Violence. From 1987 to 1989 Overkill (A really under rated band) released three albums (Taking Over, Under the Influence, and The Years of Decay). And then in the 1980's Metallica released ...And Justice of All, Megadeth released So Far, So Good... So What! (Their best selling album) and Testament released Practice What you Preach.

30 Years of Metallica???

   


     Yes It has been 30 years since the release of Metallica'a first album "Kill 'Em All" the album the start the Thrash Metal movement. So Metal Hammer has came out with a Metallica Tribute album for "Kill 'Em All" with some good bands on the list!

Metallica 3D movie? Why?

     So this is sorta of old new, I guess by now. But why come out with a 3D movie Metallica? I am waiting for the next album not for you'r next movie. It is awesome that they are putting out in 3D. But unless the concert was shot with 3D cameras then I don't think that it is going to look that good... But then again I don't make films I just watch them.

Metallica Made a lot of Money Touring Last Year!

Metallica are a money making machine! In the last few months, we've learned how much both James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are currently worth, but you know the old saying… it takes money to make money. While the band didn't do much extensive touring in the United States, they did do the European summer festival circuit and, of course, hosted their own festival. Turns out they made some big cash with their limited appearances.

Pollstar released their annual list of Top 50 worldwide tours (PDF here) 8th with $86 million in revenue over 30 shows (an average take of over four million dollars a show). beating out artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jennifer Lopez and (thank god) Nickleback as well.

In case you're wondering, the top earner of the year was Madonna at $296 million (with an average ticket price of $140) followed by Bruce Springsteen & The East Street Band and Roger Waters.

The only other "metal" band on the list is Scorpions at #38 with 32.7 million dollars in touring revenue last year.

To be fair, the band does give back. Nearly every band on the Orion festival this summer had great things to say about how they were treated (and to be honest, the press area was the most accommodating I've ever been to). The band are known for being the most gracious of hosts to openers on their tours. Also, a story recently popped up about them creating a scholarship in the name of a fan who was killed while hitchhiking home from one of their concerts. They also donated money to the reward for any information leading to the killer's arrest. They are all class!
